China’s new ban on sales of rare minerals to the US could create sensitive national security issues unless the new administration strikes an agreement to normalize other trade arenas with China. Chinese exports of tungsten may hinder the creation of armor percing bullets and shells. The Us does have Tungsten deposits in Nevada but absent a national priority push it takes 2-3 years to start an operational mine.
In addition, according to published reports, China supplies about 55 percent of germanium to the US, which is used in infrared fiber optics and other products. Australia is now developing processing and mining of rare earth metals and is another source for our nation.
