China has announced a new investigation of Nvidia Corporation over alleged violations of China’s anti-monopoly law. Few details as to the basis for the investigation were included in the announcement. Nvidia had been selling AI chips to China until it was stopped from soing so by U.S. export limitations on the more advanced semiconductor chips. In 2020, China agreed to allow Nvidia to acquire Mellanox technologies. It says now that Nvidia is supected of violating commitments made during that acquisition.
A prior investigation conducted by China 11 years ago involved Qualcomm’s local subsidiart which resulted in the company paying a fina of $975 million.
Last week the U.S. curbed exports to 140 companies including chip equipment manufacturers.
