When the U.S. placed new tariffs on Canada, Canada countered with tariffs on agriculture and livestock goods. Canada is the second largest source of US agriculture and livestock imports after Mexico, with total imports of US $12.94 billion in 2024. The top agriculture impoerts are canola, wheat, pork and seafood. Canada also is a top supplier of animal feed, and specialty crops to the US. The economic pressures on Canadian producers of the new US tariffs are causing them to look for new buyers, including the largets purchase of agricultural and food products, China.
The lates US imposed Tariffs of 25 percent has wpiked the cost of Canadian agriculture exports to the US which has already reduced the demand from American importers who pay those tariffs. Canadian producers are now seeking alternative buyers including China. China is a natural as it remains the world’s largest importers of agricultureal products with total agriculture imports about US $215 billion in 2024.
Canadaās food exports have continued to reach China in large amounts. Canada exported US$1.5 billion worth of cereals to China, while exports of fish and seafood amounted to US$1.05 billion in value, increasing 7.6 percent from 2022. China also bought US$618 million worth of edible vegetables from Canada in 2023.
