Advanced Micro Devices will reportedly need export license for AI Chips tailored for China

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has been told by U.S. officials that the chips it has designed are still too powerful to sell to China and that the company will have to obtain a license from the Commerce Department to sell the AI processor to Chinese customers, according to press reports. The U.S. has limited U.S. sales to China of more advanced and faster semiconductors that can develop AI models as they can be used in military products.

The same tighter controls also affected sales by leading AI chipmaker Nvidia Corp. had designed specifically for China . Nvidia has since developed new weaker and slower components for the Chinese market to align with the 2023 restrictions, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has said that she is examining those chips
