Samsara Eco, an Australian company backed by Singapore’s Temasek, has used artificial intelligence to design new enzymes that can break down plastics. The new enzymes reduce the use of plastics in textiles and packaging. In addition, the company leaders believe that the enzyme can be used in critical minerals which would boost the automotive industry. The minerals at issue are the ones that China is hoarding from the U.S., including rare earth minerals. The prospects for success are considered strong and investors include Jun Qu, an investment manager at Main Sequence. a tech venture capital firm founded by Australia;s national science agency in 2017.
The advantage of Samsara Ecoās process, according to the company, is that materials donāt have to be sorted for recycling. The yeast that has been grown is proprietary. When Samsara Eco passes plastics over them the enzymes snap the polymer chain linking monomers, which solidify in the water and sink to the bottom of the tank for collection.Samsara Eco has also opened a Singapore office and plans to open a KBR-designed commercial facility in Southeast Asia in 2028. The facility will process 20,000 metric tons of fabric waste a year, the company said.
Target Materials: Focused on PET, polyester, and nylon 6,6, particularly hard-to-recycle textile blends and colored plastics.
Commercialization: Partnering with companies like Lululemon and Woolworths to create apparel and food packaging, with new facilities in Australia focused on scaling up production
