Truthout has interviewed Guy McPherson, a professor emeritus of natural resources and ecology and evolutionary biology with the University of Arizona. He fears that climate disruption is already so serious that humans are in the process of causing their own extinction. His near term indicator includes the massive loss of Arctic sea ice. This, he says will lead to the release of massive amounts of methane locked in the permafrost which is melting quickly.
McPherson says that the situation is already so serious that many self-reinforcing feedback loops are in play and that there is nothing that can be done. He points to abrupt climate changes. The ocean is becoming increasingly acidic which is killing the phytoplankton. See: https://truthout.org/articles/are-humans-going-extinct/
