Two individuals Liya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan were arrested in Manhattan for alleged conspiracy to launder cryptocurrency stolen during the 2016 hack of Bitfinex, a virtual currency exchange. So far the Government has seized over $3.6 Billion in cryptocurrency linked to that hack. According to court documents the two individuals conspired to launder 119,754 bitcoin stolen from the Bitfinex platform after a hacker entered the systems and initiated over 2,000 unauthorized transactions sending the stolen Bitcoin to a digital wallet under Lichtenstein’s control. The complaint alleges Lichtenstein and Morgan used sophisticated laundering techniques including automated transactions depositing the stolen funds into accounts at various darknet markets. Lichtenstein and Morghan were charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the United States.
