Use of retired Navy nuclear reactors to power data centers is under consideration by U.S. officials and others

By Jeffrey A. Newman Esq.

Nuclear reactors that once powered the U.S. Navy’s aircraft carriers including the USS Nimitz may be re-fitted, along with others, to help power the articifical intelligence data centers. The Nimitz’s two nuclear reactors, which gave it endurance at sea, is in the works. Huntington Ingalls Industries received a $33.5 million contract modification to begin preparations for inactivation and defueling of CVN-68, including procuring long-lead materials for the process. Also, according to news reports, Texas-based HGP Intelligent Energy LLC has proposed using retired naval nuclear reactors to supply electricity for artificial intelligence data centers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. The company estimates that two repurposed reactors could generate between 450 and 520 megawatts (MW) of electricity, which would be enough to support energy-intensive AI workloads and power hundreds of thousands of homes.
