Canada maybe re-thinking its global trade and domestic policies by considering support of partnerships with China’s electric vehicle manufacturers and other Chinese manufacturers. Canada has an advantage in that it has an abunsdant suppkly of critical minerals suitable for electric vehicle battery production. China wishes to expand globally and has been selling its advanced EV cars in Mexico and Latin Anerca with great sucess. Canada presently has tariffs on Chinese EV’s that were engaged because of the risk posed by the pricing of China’s cars and what they perceived as unfair . In addition, Canada has a major business with U.S. car makers. Ā Roughly 95% of Canadian motor vehicle and parts exports are sent to the U.S. every year, while roughly 40% of U.S. motor vehicle and parts exports are sent to Canada, although those percentages have lessened since the tariff wars started. Recently Canada seems to have recognized that doing partnerships with Chinese companies could improve its EV infrastructure, giving the country the potential of becoming an EV vehicle manufacturing giant. How quickly things have changed.
Canadians want to explore ways to achieve decarbonzation whilee strengthening its economy. Canada’s new Prime Minister as of March 9, 2025, who has extensive international experience including his leadership at the Bak of Canada, has stated that his core economic goal is to grow the strongest economy in the G7 by reducing Canada’s ovverreliance on the US and and diversifying trade with like minded countries. China is Canada’s second largest trade partner after the US and Carney has acknowledged the important role that China has in Canada’s economy. Recently, speaking to the Canadian press, the Chinese Ambassador to Canada said that China is Canada’s oppotunity not Canada’s threat.
