Stellantis, a multinational automotive manufacturer, is in talks with Leapmotor to jointly manufacture an Opel-branded electric SUV using the Chinese company’s technology, to be produced in Spain, according to a Reuters article. Stellantis formed a partnership with Leapmotor after acquiring around a fifth of the Chinese company in 2023. They also have a joint venture, Leapmotor International, that is in charge of the sales and production of Leapmotor cars outside China.

CEO Carlos Tavares has explicitly said Stellantis could assemble Leapmotor cars “inside the bubble,” including North America, using any Stellantis plant if government rules and market conditions justify it

Other news reports state that Stellantis is considering broader use of Leapmotor’s architecture, battery systems, and e‑powertrains to cut costs for its own brands, including addressing U.S. affordability issues

Stellantis has also started preliminary talks with Leapmotor on the potential development of an Alfa Romeo model using the same architecture at the Zaragoza plant to optimize its capacity, the article said.Stellantis owns 14 brands including Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, Vauxhall, and Free2move. It produces passenger cars, SUVs, vans like Citroën Berlingo, and performance models in electric and hybrid options.
