Apple giving $70 discount on iPhone 15 in China as competitor Huawei sales spike on its Mate 60 phone

Retailers on Chinese e-commerce platforms were discounting the iPhone 15 just a month after its release, ahead of China’s “Singles Day”, the Nov. 11 shopping festival.

Apple’s share appears to be challenged primarily by its competitor in China, Huawei which recently released the Iphone competitor Mate 60 which features an advanced 7-nanometer processor and was touted at its launch. This processor was attention getting especially in the light of US sanctions prohibiting US companies from selling advanced semiconductors to Huawei. Huawei was sanctioned after being accused of semiconductor manufacturers of building a collection of secret chip-making facilities across China to help the technology company bypass US sanctions. It was also sanctioned The initial US measures targeting Huawei were driven by concerns that the tech giant could use its substantial presence in the world’s telecommunications networks to spy for the Chinese government. In 2020, the Federal Communications Commission designated Huawei and its Chinese peer ZTE Corp.

Apple’s net sales in China was down 2% from the year before. Apple is also offering discounts on other products in China during the Jan. 18-21 sale, including an 800 yuan ($112) discount on a MacBook Air.
