CBS News reports federal authorities in Boston have opened criminal investigation of Steward Healthcare

CBS News is reporting that federal authorities in Boston have opened a criminal investigation into Steward Health Care, which owns dozens of hospitals nationwide, including nine in Massachusetts. Steward, which is based in Dallas, recently filed for bankruptcy. CBS says Federal prosecutors at the U.S. Attorney’s office in Boston are investigating Steward Health Care regading fraud and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.The law prohibits U.S. citizens and entities from engaging in corrupt activities when operating overseas. Aside from its U.S. properties, Steward was hired by the government in Malta to run three state-owned hospitals. CBS reports that the Malta deal is the core of the investigatio.
