China has started construction on what will be the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yanlung Tsangpo river which flows through the Tibetan plateau This river also flows into India and Bangladesh through the Siang, Brahmaputra and Jumana Rivers. India has expressed concern that the massive dam could dry up areas in both India and Bangladesh and both countries have officially expressed concerns to China over this project. The River also runs through the Tibet Autonomous Region and hundreds of Tibetans have been protesting against another hydropower dam which has resulted in arrests and beatings by China, with some people seriously injured.
the project – also known as the Motuo Hydropower Station – will overtake the Three Gorges dam as the world’s largest, and could generate three times more energy.
