MIT Technology Review explores AI entering the battlefield

There is an interesting article in the August 16, 2023 which considers what could happen when AI enters the battle field. https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/08/16/1077386/war-machines/?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=tr_social&utm_campaign=NL-WhatsNext&utm_content=08.29.23

Intelligent autonomous weapons that can select and fire on a target absent human input is already in production and come under scrutiny by the UN’s Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons. With significant advancements in machine learning, the possibilities are unlimited.

For example, the article references a new gunsight developed by the Israeli defense firm elbut systems which is capable of human target detection at a range of more than 600 yards. It is already in use.

The Ukrainian army uses a program GIS Arta which can determine where to place artillary to best hit Russian targets. What may be most concerning is the development of a killer robot.

The article runs through many ethical concerns but does not say whether anyone in Government authorities is considering them seriously. A major concern now is how AI will be used in cyberattacks, a major vulnerability for the US.

Unfortunately, as there is an awareness that if we do not keep pace with China and Russia on these fronts, we will face an existential threat, which is the reason why private and military entities are advancing these technical capabilities as fast as the machines can learn.
