Pakistan just signed a Memorandum of understanding with China’s Electronics Technology Group Corporation to collaborate on research, development and innovation in quantum technologies. Both China and Pakistan stand to gain from such collaboration as Quantum computing is considered the most significant upcoming technology, surpassing AI and which will give both nations an advantage ,militarily and financially. It is presently unclear as to how much the U.S. will give in aid to Pakistan in 2026 but Pakistan’s new relationship with China should come to play in part of Congressional consideration of such funding.
Speaking at the signing ceremony recently, Pakistan’s Minister for Planning and Development Professor Ahsan Iqbal said that China will assist Pakistan in establishing the National Center for Quantum Computing, which will mark a major step forward in the country’s technological advancement. He said the government, under the ‘Uraan Pakistan’ initiative, is ensuring access to cutting-edge technologies to prepare the country for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The main danger of quantum computing is its ability to break current encryption, which could jeopardize global cybersecurity, financial security, and personal privacy. A powerful quantum computer could render obsolete the cryptographic systems that protect everything from financial transactions to government secrets. The threat is not limited to encryption. A “quantum advantage”āthe moment a quantum computer can outperform a classical oneācould disrupt many aspects of society. A “quantum arms race” is underway, with major world powers heavily investing in quantum research for military and intelligence purposes. Information asymmetry could create global security imbalances, allowing more advanced nations to exploit vulnerabilities in less-prepared countries.
This is not paranoia, it is happening and nations are lining up against each other and taking sides. However, it does seem logical that if Pakistan is now 100% with China, it might not serve our better interest in continuing sending our funds for aid to Pakistan.
The real dangers of quantum computing are not foreseeable as we do not really understand how it works. Malicious actors may discover new ways to exploit the technology and create new vulnerabilities that security experts have not yet considered, not to mention the military advantages that will be engaged by large nations and smaller ones.
