Twenty two attorneys general oppose proposed $10.3 billion settlement of lawsuit on contamination of public drinking water systems with forever chemicals by 3M Company

Twenty two attorneys general have opposed settlement of a federal court lawsuit over the contamination of U.S. public drinking water systems with “forever chemicals polyflourinated substancesused in various products, Described as “forever chemicals” because they don’t degrade naturally in the environment, PFAS have been linked to a variety of health problems, including liver and immune-system damage and some cancers.

TheAg’s in the following states are opposing the settlement; California, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Wisconsin. Also opposed were Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands.

The ttorneys general said it would force nearly all public water providers nationwide to participate unless they withdraw individually — even those that haven’t filed suits or tested for PFAS.
