China’s AI systems match Anthropic’s powerful Mythos in cybersecurity –the race gets tighter

Security researchers have announced that the new AI program released by China has matched the most powerful U.S. AI models in spotting security attacks. The use of Chinese AI systems has increased heavily as companies, including Microsoft, are considering whether they will offer Chinese models on their platform.

The whole issue of AI’s use to find cyber intrusions is a major concern, as it could and probably will be used by hackers to find ways to attack businesses. In addition, this new advance has economic implications because China’s Zhipus GLM can be downloaded and run on hardware operated by anyone, without supervision.  In benchmarking tests, according to cybersecurity company Semgrep, GLM-5.2 bested Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 model, which was released in May. When given further instructions, Opus 4.8 and GLM-5.2 can match Mythos in bug-finding ability, according to researchers. Companies worldwide are using cheaper, capable AI models, as they appear to enable efficient use at a fraction of the cost. It is unclear whether these developments will have military uses. Stay tuned.
