Ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt warns U.S. not to assume the US will win AI race with China but to learn from China’s AI activities

Jeffrey A. Newman Esq.

Google’s former CEO Eric Schmidt recently granted a podcast interview in which said we should not assume that both China and the US are competing over AI on equal footing. The keypoints were reported in the Times of India. Schmidt explained that China’s focus is on applying AI across various sectors using an open source AI model instead of our closed source model. He indicated the US should expand its approach to apply AI as a policy and apply it, as China does to everyting including consumer apps, robots and in addition that Us restrictions on semiconductor exports and China have slowed the US pursuit of artificial general intelligence. (AIG). AIG is a kind of AI that can perfornm a wide range of tasks at a human level of understanding. It would have the ability to learn, reason, adapt and apply its knowledge in different domans similar to humans but not the same. He feels that that countries around the world are more likely to adopt Chinese models that are open source.

I posed the question to AI as to whether the US or China is winning the AI race. The response suggested that the U.S. is ahead but the breakdown presented really suggests that each nation has different advantages. Here is the response I got:

“The United States currently holds the lead in advanced AI development, particularly in core technologies like AI chips and large language models, but China is rapidly closing the gap and leads in areas like AI patent filings and broad adoption. While the US excels in foundational breakthroughs and cutting-edge research, China’s strengths lie in its ability to quickly commercialize AI technologies and integrate them at scale, especially within its manufacturing sector. “

US Strengths

  • Cutting-edge Research: The US pioneered the advanced computing chips and large language models that define the current AI era.
  • Advanced Technology: US companies are at the forefront of developing sophisticated AI systems, including those that generate images, video, and complex agents.
  • Leading AI Firms: The US has a significant advantage in the number of world-class AI firms and receives substantial investment in the sector.

China’s Strengths

  • Rapid Adoption and Commercialization: China excels at quickly adopting AI technologies, integrating them into its economy and manufacturing to an unprecedented scale.
  • AI Patent Filings: China leads the world in the number of AI-related patent applications, demonstrating aggressive progress in intellectual property.
  • Open-Source Platforms: Chinese tech companies have embraced open-source AI models, making them freely available and adaptable, which facilitates broad user adoption.
