Huawei used TSMC, Samsung, SK Hynix component in top AI chips

According to recent news articles and investigations, Huawei Technologies, China’s major technology company that makes telecommunications infrastructures, used advanced components from TSMC, Taiwan’s semiconductor maker. These were the findings of Techlnsights, an Ottawa based research firm which discovered the parts during teardowns. It reveals that China relies on foreign harware to boost its domestic production of AI semiconductors.

TechInsights also found products from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in several samples of Huawei’s third generation Ascend 910C chips.They also found an older-generation type of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), designated HBM2E, made by Samsung and SK Hynix. Components from the two manufacturers were found in two different samples of the Ascend 910C, TechInsights said .

The U.S. has added Huawei to its “Entity List”, restricting the flow of technology to the Chinese firm. added Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (Huawei) and many of its non-U.S. affiliates to the
Entity List effective May 16, 2019 for allegedly providing prohibited financial services to Iran, and obstruction of justice in connection with the investigation of those alleged violations of U.S. sanctions. According to news reports, the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (Huawei) has a ties to the Chinese military and government, and national security threats to foreign countries. Huawei acquisitions have been blocked on two occasions by the U.S. Government, and U.S. military and government officials have warned companies against working with Huawei on multiple occasions in recent years According to Bloomberg, Investigations have revealed that Huawei personnel have jointly worked on research projects with members of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), including efforts in artificial intelligence, radio communications, and satellite imagery analysis. Some projects specifically involved PLA’s Central Military Commission and the National University of Defense Technology—demonstrating direct collaboration between the company’s employees and Chinese armed forces.

According to CNN, U.S. intelligence, including the FBI, has asserted that Huawei equipment located near U.S. military sites could intercept and interfere with Defense Department communications, amplifying concerns about potential military intelligence operations. These capabilities and patterns of Huawei’s market targeting have been interpreted as evidence of ties to the Chinese military’s intelligence objectives
