Uncle Sam joins case against HMA Tenet for kickbacks to OB clinic docs

The Department of Justice has joined a case dealing with Health Management Associates (HMA) and Tenet Healthcare hospitals where it says those companies paid kickbacks to obstetric clinics serving primarily undocumented Hispanic women in return for referral of those patients for labor and delivery at the hospital. The hospitals then billed Medicaid programs for the services provided and also got additional Medicare funds based on the influx of low-income patients.

HMA operates 71 hospitals in 15 states. The hospitals involved in this case are in Georgia and South Carolina.
